Review: A Power Unbound by Freya Marske

“A Power Unbound is the final entry in Freya Marske’s beloved, award-winning Last Binding trilogy, the queer historical fantasy series that began with A Marvellous Light.

Secrets! Magic! Enemies to. . .something more?

Jack Alston, Lord Hawthorn, would love a nice, safe, comfortable life. After the death of his twin sister, he thought he was done with magic for good. But with the threat of a dangerous ritual hanging over every magician in Britain, he’s drawn reluctantly back into that world.

Now Jack is living in a bizarre puzzle-box of a magical London townhouse, helping an unlikely group of friends track down the final piece of the Last Contract before their enemies can do the same. And to make matters worse, they need the help of writer and thief Alan Ross.

Cagey and argumentative, Alan is only in this for the money. The aristocratic Lord Hawthorn, with all his unearned power, is everything that Alan hates. And unfortunately, Alan happens to be everything that Jack wants in one gorgeous, infuriating package.

When a plot to seize unimaginable power comes to a head at Cheetham Hall―Jack’s ancestral family estate, a land so old and bound in oaths that it’s grown a personality as prickly as its owner―Jack, Alan and their allies will become entangled in a night of champagne, secrets, and bloody sacrifice . . . and the foundations of magic in Britain will be torn up by the roots before the end.”

Happy Friday! ✨

ADPR | Today is my stop on the tour for A Power Unbound by Freya Marske and I have been so EXCITED to share my review! Thank you so much to the amazing Black Crow PR, Tor UK & Pan Macmillan for my copy and for having me on the tour!

This trilogy has my whole heart, I love it so much! Each book has been absolute perfection and it is one of my all time favourite trilogies. I’m so sad it’s ending but so happy to have experienced it!

I really enjoyed the focus on Lord Jack Hawthorne and Alan in this book! The dichotomy between Jack’s wealth and Alan’s near poverty was so well written and really reflected the context of the time! The character growth between them both as the story progressed was so well done and how they realised they had more in common than they thought as the stereotypes they pinned on each other started falling away. The chemistry between them was absolutely electric and Freya Marske has proved for the third time that she writes the BEST SPICE!

Plus, I LOVED that the whole gang comes back together in this book! I love my queer found family so much and the characters worked so well together. You can really feel the sense of family in these books and the genuine love they all have for each other.

Of course, I can’t forget to mention the mystery of The Final Contract! This was such a fun mystery throughout the three books and I loved how everything came together. The magic system is one of the best ones I’ve come across and the variations of magic through different people and even houses was so fun!

A Power Unbound is a brilliant read and such a fantastic end to an amazing trilogy! I have loved every second of these books and I’m so excited to see what Freya Marske writes next!
